Route 66 - Start

Route 66 - Start:

We figured on this trip that we'd take portions of Historic Route 66 on both our way out and back from Arizona, a more interesting alternative to driving on the interstate.   Route 66 begins in Chicago and ends in Los Angeles; it's the original cross-country road before the interstate highway system was put in place.   As such, it's full of some ghosts of the past - kitschy reminders of travel prior the 1960's.

We didn't want to backtrack to Chicago from Schaumburg to start at the begininng of Old 66, so we picked it up in the town of Romeoville Illinois, and wove the neary 200 miles today to Springfield.

Some of the signage was a little sketchy (we got lost in Bloomington), and our GPS kept directing us back to the speedier highway, but we'd say that the slow road was worth the effort.

I'm sure there will be many more roadside attractions to post in the days to come.
