Colorado Rocky Mountain High

 Colorado Rocky Mountain High:

Pike's Peak view from the town of Woodland Park

U.S. Route 24 out of Colorado Springs was a slow and steady climb and brought us past the entrance to Pike's Peak auto road (which we declined to do in the RV).

The picture doesn't do justice to the uphill pitch of the road

Who knew?  Route 24 used to be a cross-country road

We reached a high point of 9,507 feet at Wilkerson Pass about 30 miles out from Colorado Springs.   The visitor center there provided us with our first glimpse of Colorado’s 14,000 footers, including the so-called Collegiate Range (Mt. Yale, Mt. Harvard, etc).

The landscape could best be described as “high chaparral”  - rolling plains with views of the snow-covered peaks in the distance.  Definitely cattle country, with fences and workers' trailers interspersed.

Those little dots are cows

We did a little bit of the tourist thing in the town of Buena Vista (population: 2,855; elevation: 7,965: motto: "8,000 Feet Above Average") – a town near the Arkansas River and popular spot for water adventurers.

Buena Vista, Colorado: even the trash cans are works of art
